Search Options can be specified in Search view or Distribution Charts view. You can also use them when you work with filters. They allow you to control certain qualities of searches that cannot be controlled in the text of a search pattern. See Also: Similar Environment Options and Minimal Pair Options.
The following search options are available:
Select ()
Ignore Diacritics to cause the
search to ignore the diacritics that modify phones in a transcription.
For example, if your search pattern is o/*_*
and you ignore diacritics in the search, a match would be found for
both transcriptions tot and töt.
Select () Ignore
Stress to cause a search to ignore stress characters in transcriptions.
For example, if you ignore stress marks and your search pattern is ak/*_* then a match would be found for both
transcriptions wakike and wa'kike.
Select () Ignore
Length to a search to ignore length characters in transcriptions.
For example, if you ignore length marks and your search pattern is
i/*_* then a match would be found for
both transcriptions kike and ki:ke.
Select
()
Ignore Tone to cause a search to
ignore tone characters in transcriptions. For example, if your search
pattern is o/*_* and you ignore tone
in the search, a match would be found for both transcriptions tot and tót.
Select ()
Ignore Boundary to cause a search
to ignore boundary markers, such as periods (.) used for syllable
breaks, in transcriptions.
Select () Ignore
Pitch-Phonation to cause a search to ignore pitch-phonation
characters in transcriptions.
In the Records with Uncertain Phones area, choose one of the following to determine how Phonology Assistant (PA) searches records containing transcriptions with uncertain phones:
Search Transcriptions Derived Only from Primary Uncertainties to only search the transcription that can be derived from the primary uncertain phone(s) in the record. For example, if a record contains the transcription b(a/i)t then PA would search only bat because [a] is the primary uncertainty in the (a/i) uncertain phone group.
Search Transcriptions Derived from Primary and Non Primary Uncertainties to search all transcriptions that can be derived from uncertain phones in the record. For example, if a record contains the transcription b(a/i)t then PA would search both bat and bit.
You choose search options for each active search independently.
By default, all characters in the Ignore Stress/Syllable and Ignore Tone groups are selected. To clear an individual character so it is not ignored, click the character until it is not highlighted. Repeat this for each character you do not want ignored.
When at least one, but not
all, characters are selected in a group, the state of the check box
associated with that group is indeterminate ().
When none of the characters in a group are selected, the check box
is cleared (
) and, when all of the characters
in a group are selected, the check box is selected (
).
The categories (Diacritics, Stress, Length, Boundary, Tone and Pitch-Phonation) match those in the Patterns & Pattern Building pane, Chart & Chart Building pane, and Value column when you work with filters. The CV Patterns tab categories are similar.
