In a consonant-vowel pattern, C corresponds to a consonant and V corresponds to a vowel. Phonology Assistant (PA) can either display or compute CV patterns.
PA displays the CV Pattern field from the data source for a record if you mapped the field in the Standard Format Data Source Properties dialog box and if the field contains data for the record.
Otherwise, PA computes them from the Phonetic field.
If PA computes them, you can use this CV Patterns tab to specify other characters (for example, stress, syllable, length, or tone characters) to display in the CV Pattern field. PA saves options separately for each project.
On the left side of the tab, you see check boxes for these categories: Display Stress, Display Length, Display Boundary, Display Tone, and Pitch-Phonation. Do any of the following for one or more areas:
Select () the check box to include
all the characters in that area.
All the characters in the area are highlighted.
Clear () the check box to exclude
all the characters in that area.
None of the characters in the area are highlighted.
To include or exclude a character in an area, click the character.
If a character is highlighted, it is included.
If a character is not highlighted, it is excluded.
The indeterminate state
()
appears if some (not all) of the characters
in an area are highlighted.
To include other characters, type them in the Display these characters box, separated by spaces.
If you type a phone (for example, ʔ), it appears in CV patterns instead of C or V.
If you type a non-base character, a diacritic placeholder ◌ appears in the box with the non-base character.
The categories Stress, Length, Boundary, Tone and Pitch-Phonation are similar to those in the Search Options drop-down list, Patterns & Pattern Building pane, Chart & Chart Building pane, and Value column when you work with filters.
