The lists of Consonants, Vowels and Other Phones on the descriptive and distinctive features class dialog boxes show you all the phones found in the data sources of the active project. As you select features to include in your class, all the phones matching those features (with the specified AND or OR or NOT operator applied) will appear bold. All other phones will appear dimmed.
To change whether or not dimmed phones are displayed in a list, click the down arrow on the right side of the heading above the list and select Show All Phones from the drop-down menu.
When Show All Phones is checked, all phones in the list will be displayed whether or not they match the selected features. Those matching the selected features will appear bold, while those that do not will appear dimmed.
When Show All Phones is cleared, only the phones matching the selected features will be shown in the list and will appear bold.
Consonants are displayed firstly by manner of articulation and secondly by place of articulation. Vowels are displayed firstly from closed to open and secondly by place of articulation. You may further control the display of the Consonants and Vowels lists by clicking the down arrow on the right side of the heading above the list and selecting one of the following from the drop-down menu:
Compact View to display as many phones across each row as space will allow.
Expanded View to display the phones in each manner of articulation in their own row.
